Ziggo is losing many customers again, TV subscriptions are increasingly being canceled

--

VodafoneZiggo lost relatively many customers in the first three months of this year. The provider is increasingly affected by competition from fiber optic. More Dutch people are also deciding to cancel their TV subscription.

In the first quarter, 33,000 Ziggo customers canceled their television subscription, a decrease of 4.2 percent on an annual basis. The largest relative decline in the number of TV customers to date.

Ziggo also lost 26,600 fixed internet customers. The number of people canceling an internet subscription was greater than the previous quarter. In an explanation, the provider says that this is due to ‘fierce competition’ in the consumer market for fixed internet, by which it refers to fiber optic providers. The number of fixed telephony subscriptions fell by 86,400.

More mobile subscribers

The number of mobile subscribers increased by 22,300, a growth of 3 percent. Ziggo also generates an average of 4.2 percent more turnover per customer from fixed services and 3.4 percent more from mobile services. “We are on track to achieve our financial targets this year and are focused on executing our strategy,” said Ritchy Drost, CFO of VodafoneZiggo.

European football and faster 5G

VodafoneZiggo will bid on the frequencies for the 3.5 Ghz band at the 5G frequency auction later this year. The 3.5 GHz band enables faster 5G connections.

From August, Ziggo Sport will broadcast the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League for three years. Some matches can only be viewed via the Ziggo Go app, even for customers of competitors such as KPN, Odido and Delta. Ziggo lost the battle for Formula 1 broadcasting rights to Viaplay.
