The Italian language is perfect – molto bene – to translate ordinary words into poetry. ‘Four-door’ becomes ‘Quattroporte’. ‘Red head’ becomes ‘Testarossa’. This new ultra-GT from Ferrari is called ‘Twelve-cylinder’ in good Dutch. But in Maranello they prefer you to call him Dodici Cilindri. On paper you can also call it the Ferrari 12 Cilindri. The car also comes as an open Spider.

The new 12 Cilindri is an unmistakable celebration of Ferrari’s favorite engine: the big V12. The big news is that Ferrari still doesn’t want to hear anything about turbos and this new car will not have hybrid systems either. The brand does say that they had to apply the ‘most advanced emission reduction technology’ to get this thing through all the inspections.

They had to make the V12 less loud

Due to all the emission and noise requirements, the new Ferrari unfortunately only produces 72 decibels, although plenty can be done about this afterwards. What Ferrari has done is focus more on the sound of the V12 in the cabin. The tones in the midrange are said to be richer than before and more audible in the interior. This car is more for the driver, and less of one crowd pleaser.

The 6.5-liter V12 shares its genes with the engine from the 812, but the 12 Cilindri gets lighter titanium connecting rods and forged pistons so that it revs faster. The power is 830 hp, the torque is 678 Nm and the maximum speed is 9,500 revolutions per minute. The 0-100 time is 2.9 seconds, the 0-200 time is about 7.9 seconds and the top speed is over 340 km/h.

For the critical reader: the new Ferrari is indeed as powerful as the 812 Competizione and not much faster than the 812 Superfast, but pure speed is not the goal of this GT. The Ferrari 12 Cilindri’s main task was to keep the twelve-cylinder engine alive. Not an easy feat in these times. If you want fast acceleration, you can buy an SF90 together with a spit bag.

The appearance of the 12 Cilindri

The styling of the Ferrari 12 Cilindri is more radical than you are used to from front-engine models. The dark mask on the nose is reminiscent of the 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Can you order this strip in the color of the car? Design boss Flavio Manzoni gives the most Italian answer: ‘Over my dead body’. This strip is therefore always black from the factory.

The corners of the rear rise between 60 and 300 km/h for 50 kilos of downforce on the rear axle. Not the entire back comes up, because that would take up too much space in the trunk. By the way, it is 270 liters, enough for a golf bag. Due to active aerodynamics, the weight has increased slightly by almost 40 kilos. Dry it weighs 1,560 kilos. Ready to drive, so about 100 kilos more.

The rear wheels of the Ferrari 12 Cilindri steer and the wheelbase is 20 millimeters shorter than the 812. It should therefore steer sharper than its predecessor. In addition, the Side Slip Control software allows you to take a neat turn sideways. The automatic transmission has a double clutch and the power goes to the rear wheels.

Same as Ferrari 12 Cilindri Spider

The interior is less radical than the exterior. The passenger gets his own screen and the navigation screen is low on the dashboard. This now also includes the heating controls. You can also order the 12 Cilindri directly as a Spider. The roof disappears in 14 seconds at the push of a button in the rear. According to Ferrari, you can even have a normal conversation with the roof open at 200 km/h.
