Joost Klein (26) surprised friend and foe yesterday with the first images of his act for the Eurovision Song Contest. The snippets that have been distributed show that Joost is on stage with his buddy and influencer Appie Mussa (25), among others. Mussa wears a blue bird suit and meanwhile visuals of currywurst and paella appear in the background. The bookmakers now estimate Joost’s chances of winning to be lower than before his first rehearsal: he has now dropped to place 4. What does the rest of Europe think?

“It’s crazy and that’s what we want”

Eurovision guru Cornald Maas immediately took office yesterday after Joost’s first rehearsal. He assures the Netherlands that there will be more to see than the Pino impersonator and cheap-looking visuals. ‘Joost Klein’s first rehearsal is over (…) and it went well! With a few visual surprises that the organization has not yet revealed via TikTok,” he teases.

Foreign press is also enthusiastic. Wiwibloggs, a major European Eurovision website, enjoys the snippets we saw. “I think the Netherlands has become a favorite. It’s crazy and that’s what we want,” says William Lee Adams of the channel.

The reactions on various social media channels are also enthusiastic. Everyone seems to realize that this is not all we have seen. ‘Joost is smart, he just gives us some breadcrumbs. Can’t wait for the whole act,” someone wrote under Wiwibloggs’ YouTube video. ‘The winner of Eurovision Song Contest 2024’, is heard en masse under the Eurovision TikTok video with the first images of Joost’s performance. That TikTok has already been viewed 1.6 million times, much more than the rehearsal videos from other countries.

Although the online reactions are positive, after the release of the first images of his act, Joost is in 4th place with the bookmakers, while he held the number 3 position for more than a week. At the time of writing, the top 3 is occupied by Switzerland, Croatia and Italy.

In which position Joost ends up depends of course on whether he makes it through next week’s semi-finals. But he probably doesn’t have to worry about that. ‘Televote winner’, many people write online. For the first time this year, the results of the semi-finals will be decided by the voters at home and no longer partly by jury members from all over Europe. The jury still has a vote in the final.

Eurovision Song Contest reporter Aran Bade is also enthusiastic about Joost’s performance. You’ll see more about it in the video below.
