Alkmaar is becoming too small for the young Carrell. And ultimately the Netherlands too. Big shows in Germany, that’s what he wants. “Rudi became ‘a showmaster’, as our German friends said. His dream came true. Dancing and singing like Gene Kelly. On television, even in colour. Great success in the Netherlands and Germany, but he also remained a boy from Alkmaar. Rudi was a promoter of Alkmaar, also in his German shows.”

Golden Camera

The promoter of the cheese city died seventeen years ago in Bremen, Germany from lung cancer. A few months before his death, Carrell received the most important German television award, Goldene Kamera. A standing ovation that lasted several minutes was the result during the awards evening. His illness had seriously affected his vocal cords. “I will live on repeat for a long time.”

But now also on the Alkmaar Munnikenbolwerk. “Rudi was born in December and I was born a month later. It was wonderful to experience this,” says cousin Annie Kesselaar. She looks at the image attentively together with other family members. Rudi’s daughter Annemieke is visibly moved. “It’s so nice to see so many people here. Thank you.”
