Complaining Max Verstappen ‘just’ the fastest again despite messy first training in Miami | formula 1

--

With summaryMax Verstappen set the fastest time in Miami during the first and only free practice. The Red Bull Racing driver complained on the on-board radio about his brakes and tires for almost the entire session, but he ‘simply’ found himself at the top of the times list when he sat down for the first time.

Just like two weeks ago in China, there is only one free training session of one hour scheduled on the streets of Miami this weekend. Every minute of FP1 was therefore used to gain knowledge about the circuit, the car and the tires.

Doing a lot of kilometers was the motto, but that did not apply to Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque spun after five minutes and could not get his SF-24 to turn again despite frantic efforts. The race management then decided to wave the red flag, which halted training for more than ten minutes. Leclerc’s Ferrari was pushed away and so the 26-year-old driver was able to start the sprint qualifying early.

Little grip, Verstappen brakes twice

The session resumed with 45 minutes left on the clock. The rest of the year there is no racing at the Miami International Autodrome and so the track was very ‘green’. There was little rubber left on the asphalt and Verstappen also experienced this. The Limburger braked halfway through the free practice at turn 17. However, he was able to stop his RB20 in time and was able to continue on his way without any problems.

Not much later, almost the exact same thing happened. Verstappen shot straight again and then complained over the on-board radio in the direction of race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase. The leader in the world championship was unable to string together a full lap and stayed at the bottom of the time list for a long time. When Verstappen sat down one last time in the final phase, it worked and he was ‘simply’ the fastest again.

Oscar Piastri came closest to Verstappen. The McLaren driver conceded a tenth. Carlos Sainz and George Russell were numbers three and four. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Pérez set the sixth fastest time.

The sprint qualification is scheduled for later tonight at 10:30 PM. The starting grid for Saturday’s sprint race is determined.

Verstappen shoots straight again

There is still little grip and that makes braking difficult for Verstappen. He complains to Gianpiero Lambiase about the brake balance. He just shot straight again.

Times are getting faster and faster at the Miami International Autodrome. Sainz – the Ferrari driver who still drives laps – is in the lead on hard tires. Perez concedes three tenths at the moment, but the batting order could look completely different in more than 25 minutes.

We see a mix of mediums and hard tires in Miami for now. Not only do the drivers have to find the right balance for a flying lap, this is also the only moment to choose the perfect setup for tomorrow’s sprint race.

Sergio Perez just set the fastest time on mediums.

Red flag!

The race management decides to wave the red flag. Leclerc is still stuck, sort of backwards. But not completely. It is a special sight in the opening phase in Miami.

The Ferrari driver can no longer turn his car and gets out. It is the end of practice for him and so he will have to start the sprint qualification without any data.

Yellow flag after Leclerc spin

Charles Leclerc is pointing the wrong way. The Ferrari driver has spun and now has to turn very slowly in the middle of the track. It takes some doing and the Monegasque is still not on his way. The yellow flag has been hanging for about two minutes now and Leclerc is blocking half the track.
