With the arrival of trumpeter Avishai Cohen and composer-conductor Tijn Wybenga, the festival has managed to attract interesting musicians.

On June 7 and 8, the first anniversary of Jazz te Gast in Zuidhorn promises to be a special one.

International top musicians, young talent and the North Pole Orchestra come together for an unprecedented adventure. Making new music on the spot and then performing it in the gardens of De Gast. Under the guidance of the Artist in Residence (Cohen) and an Artist Entrepreneur (Wybenga), 13 musicians create new material on Friday. This will be presented the next day. During the day on 7 different stages in the gardens of De Gast – which are free to enter – and in the evening in a final concert with the North Pole Orchestra.

Greenhouse
The small scale is what makes Jazz te Gast so great, says artistic director Geert Drion. “It is a real maker’s festival. All musicians are gathered in the ‘Greenhouse’ the day before. A kind of greenhouse in which they prepare 14 new concerts in 1 day. And then perform it in the beautiful gardens at De Gast in Zuidhorn. The musicians have been brought together by trumpeter Avishai Cohen (New York) and composer-conductor Tijn Wybenga (Amsterdam). This year the ‘Greenhouse’ consists of: percussionist Vernon Chatlein (Curaçao), guitarist Teis Semey (Denmark), trumpeter Suzan Veneman (Netherlands), saxophonist/clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst (Belgium), pianist Elias Stemeseder (Austria), drummer Anton Eger ( Denmark), bassist Alessandro Fongaro (Italy), saxophonist Marc Alberto (Netherlands), singer Leïla Martial (France), Kora player Momi Maiga (Senegal) and vibraphonist Aleksander Sever (Slovenia). In addition to the free afternoon program, these jazz musicians will give a joint final concert with new work in the evening.

Orchestra and bands
On Saturday afternoon, the Greenhouse artists will be accompanied by musicians from the North Pole Orchestra, students from the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen and bands from all over the Netherlands. For example, WonderYears plays music by Stevie Wonder, the Teus Nobel trio is inspired by Chet Baker and MaDaBa combines jazz and contemporary music with Middle Eastern maqam. Saxophone Quartet performs fado and contemporary music, while the Meander Trio brings together American folk music and traditional music from Brazil and Japan. The conservatory presents the Sarasvati Gricar trio and the ZOOE organ trio.

Final concert
The implementation of the result from the ‘Greenhouse’ will take place on Saturday afternoon, June 8, in 7 private gardens at De Gast in Zuidhorn. This section is accessible free of charge. The final concert is in the evening in the garden of Villa Arnichem. Then all the musicians – in surprising combinations – play their new work. The final concert was produced especially for the festival by the Dutch composer-conductor Tijn Wybenga. According to him, it will be a melting pot at the cutting edge, in which the musicians will push each other to great heights to take.
