Sheep farmers relieved to have a quickly introduced vaccine

A vaccine against bluetongue has been immediately approved for use in the Netherlands. One million shots could be available within a few days to a week. Sheep and cows may already be protected against the virus next summer.

To be well protected against bluetongue, sheep need one vaccination. Cattle need two. There must be a few weeks between these two vaccinations. It then takes a few more weeks before the animals are completely protected.

Two weeks after the first delivery, one million doses will again be available. More doses will probably come after that. It is also expected that a vaccine will soon be available.

Good news for 3,375 people: they will receive a ribbon

3,375 people received a royal honor on Friday: from a Japanese scientist to an aid worker during the 2011 massacre in a shopping center in Alphen aan den Rijn. Nothing was distributed in only one municipality.

Last year, 2,832 people received royal recognition. This means that the number of ribbons has increased by almost 20 percent.

The Netherlands with aviation and industry will be climate neutral in 2050

The Netherlands can become climate neutral by 2050, even if our country retains a large aviation sector and a lot of industry. It is a “mega-complex change” that affects all parts of the economy. If we behave more sustainably, we make the puzzle easier, experts say.

“It is nice that we can give this message,” says Marko Hekkert, director of the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL). In front of him are more than twelve hundred pages of research, which together show how the Netherlands can become a country that does not release extra CO2 into the air.

Voyager 1’s life saved again

The life of the Voyager 1 space probe, launched in 1977, has been saved again. Due to a defective chip, the artificial moon sent unusable data. Space agency NASA has solved that problem with a software update.

Five months ago, Voyager 1 started spouting gibberish. The data received by the American space agency NASA was no longer usable.

NASA wrote a software update. That was quite a challenge because Voyager 1’s systems are almost fifty years old and therefore have very limited memory. We managed to send the software update to the space probe and thus bypass the defective chip.
