Apple will take down iOS 18 on June 10 during WWDC: the next major iPhone update. You won’t be able to start working on it yourself until September. The update will not be a big surprise, because a lot has already been leaked.
Please note: it is not certain that all these features will also appear in the final version of iOS 18. Especially with the AI functions, it remains to be seen whether Apple will meet the deadline.
More freedom to customize home screen
You’ll likely get the ability to rearrange app icons on the home screen with iOS 18, as Apple finally allows white space. The icons remain on an invisible grid, but they no longer all have to be connected.
Major adjustments for Apple apps
Major updates are ready for virtually all Apple apps. Largely due to the addition of AI. Apple Music will soon be able to generate playlists, the Messages app will predict your sentences and Safari will have an assistant to summarize pages. Mail, Photos and Fitness also need a major overhaul, but details are still lacking.
The new Apple Maps features don’t require AI. With custom routes you indicate which roads you like to travel on and with topographic maps you get more details about your walking route, such as elevation changes and viewpoints.

The Messages app will receive support for RCS with iOS 18. This makes sending messages between iPhones and Android devices work better. Right now, if you send a photo via Android’s messaging app to an iPhone user, there’s a tremendous amount of compression taking place.
With support for RCS, the successor to SMS invented by Google, photos are not only more beautiful, but you can also send videos and audio messages, see if someone is typing and see if someone has read your message.
Finally an upgrade for Siri
It looks like Apple is finally going to improve Siri so that the smart assistant becomes useful again. With the help of language models, Siri will soon be able to have more natural conversations, which in practice will ensure that the voice assistant better understands what you are asking.
Siri would also be more strongly integrated with Messages and Shortcuts. Thanks to AI, Sir would soon also better understand how iPhone apps work. You could then ask your iPhone to do something, and Siri can do it for you within apps.
More AI features
Apple will probably also use artificial intelligence in other ways in iOS 18. The company itself is investing heavily in this technology, but is also in discussions with Google and OpenAI to use their technology for new functions.
