A letter to the White House signed by 86 Democratic members of the US House of Representatives has increased pressure on President Joe Biden to take a firmer position on ally Israel.

In the letter, Democrats urge Biden to consider halting arms sales to Israel if that country does not change its way of waging war in Gaza.

Biden’s party members express their “grave concerns” about “the deliberate withholding of humanitarian aid”. Israel’s restrictions on US-backed humanitarian assistance in Gaza “have contributed to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe,” they said in the letter.

The Democrats are asking Biden to make it clear to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that any obstruction of aid to Gaza “jeopardizes further offensive security assistance from the United States.”

War in Gaza also divides US

The battle in Gaza is also leading to polarization and protests in the US. In the past week, protests for the Palestinians and against Israel took place at various universities. The protests started two weeks ago at Columbia University in New York and then spread to more than forty other universities.

Pro-Palestinian protesters have occupied several university campuses with tent camps. In recent days, the protests have also led to pro-Israel counter-demonstrations.
