Lewis Hamilton crossed the line eighth in the F1 Sprint at the Miami International Autodrome. However, the Mercedes driver does not get a point. He has been reinstated after a significant time penalty.

Hamilton had to start the Sprint in Florida from twelfth position on the grid after missing out on SQ3. He got away well from his position, but was compromised in the first corner. The Briton dove on the inside of Fernando Alonso, who in turn had to make space and therefore hit Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll. The latter spun Lando Norris around again and both dropped out. After the Safety Car period, Hamilton started chasing Kevin Magnussen.

Lap after lap, the Haas driver defended his eighth position, preventing Hamilton from getting past Magnussen. Yuki Tsunoda took advantage in the final phase and overtook both of them. Hamilton managed to brake the colorful VCARB on the last lap and still finished eighth. He thought he had won that highly sought-after point, but was subsequently punished by the stewards.

Hamilton appeared to have driven too fast in the pit lane (10.7 km/h above the speed limit of 80 km/h) during the Safety Car period and that is a violation of article 34.7 of the sporting regulations. He received a drive-through penalty for this, but because the penalty was handed out after the finish, this was converted into a 20-second time penalty. As a result, the man from Stevenage is not classified eighth, but sixteenth. Tsunoda got his point back.
