Michael van Gerwen recorded an impressive victory over Luke Littler in the semi-finals of the Premier League match in Leeds on Thursday: 6-1. The Brabander thus secured a place in the play-offs, despite a defeat in the final.

Van Gerwen let Littler reach 1-1 in the First Direct Arena and then won five legs in a row. With this he gave the seventeen-year-old Englishman a rare big defeat. Losing World Cup finalist Littler is still well ahead in the Premier League.

In the final, Van Gerwen then had to acknowledge his superiority in Luke Humphries. The reigning world champion won 6-5 in an exciting match. Humphries averaged 99.99 points in the final. Van Gerwen had to make do with 92.72 points.

Even before the final, Van Gerwen knew that he could no longer fall outside the top four in the Premier League standings. This means he is assured of a place in the play-offs, which also applies to Humphries and Littler. Michael Smith and Nathan Aspinall will compete for the fourth and final ticket in Sheffield next week.

The Premier League of Darts play-offs are on Thursday, May 23 in London. Van Gerwen is the record holder with seven final victories. That’s one more than legend Phil Taylor.
