Microsoft adds passkey support to consumer accounts. This makes it one of the largest services for which the passwordless login method is available. Users can log in with their face, finger, PIN code or security key.

Microsoft writes on a support page that users will be able to create a passkey on their personal Microsoft account in the future. With passkeys it is possible to log in without a password. Instead, a key pair is created that is linked to a physical device and the account. Tweakers previously wrote a background about how that works.

According to Microsoft, users can create a passkey themselves and secure it with a facial scan, fingerprint, PIN code or physical security key. These are the same security methods as Windows Hello, which already allows users to log in to their local Windows PCs. In the future, this will also be possible on local devices and online accounts.

Signing in applies to Microsoft apps and websites. Microsoft specifically mentions Microsoft 365 and Copilot, but passkey support for the mobile versions of applications will only come in the coming weeks.
