US Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced a motion to impeach the Speaker of the House of Representatives. She said her party colleague Mike Johnson has repeatedly shown that he is unfit for the top job.

Greene belongs to the far right flank of her party. She had previously indicated that she would take action against Johnson if he allowed a vote on a military aid package for Ukraine. She complained that Johnson is being helped by Democrats “because he gives them everything they want.”

At a press conference with her party colleague Thomas Massie, Greene announced that she wants to force a vote on Johnson’s fate next week. If she succeeds, it would be the second time in several months that Republicans have sent home a speaker of parliament from their own party. Kevin McCarthy had to resign in October.

The attempt to oust Johnson could lead to new divisions within the Republican Party in an important election year. The Republicans have a narrow majority in the House of Representatives of Congress. Greene’s initiative is not seen as particularly promising, because the Democrats have already made it clear that they will try to stop his impeachment.
