Images released by the police today do not show the assault itself, only what preceded it. Those images showing a man hitting the cat hard against the ground are too gruesome. Helga did see those images. “Disgusting,” she says to RTL News. “I really love cats, I was very upset.”

‘Very sweet cat’

She had a special bond with the cat. Miesje stood at the door of the coffee shop every day, sometimes before the shop opened around noon. “Miesje was always there, she sat with customers and on my lap. She was a really sweet cat.”

Miesje was also loved in the neighborhood. When the weather was nice she often sat on the electricity box in front of YoYo. That was also the place where Miesje was sitting when an unknown man grabbed her and knocked her to the ground with great force. Once on the ground, she was kicked and landed hard against a planter. Miesje’s owner found her dead on the ground moments later.

Helga: “This was a big shock for the neighborhood. Everyone knew Miesje. Customers sometimes still ask where she is. I have good contact with Miesje’s owner. I think it’s so bad for her too.”

Helga is happy that the police are taking the case seriously and that the story is being shared in the media. After all, the perpetrator is still walking around freely. “I’m kind of the mother of the neighborhood. This is such a nice neighborhood, how can this happen? I know everyone here, but I’ve never seen this man. I don’t think he’s from the neighborhood.”
