Unapproachable Max Verstappen takes pole in Miami and extends perfect series | formula 1

--

With videoMax Verstappen is still undefeated in qualifying in 2024. The Dutchman kept Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc behind him, as he did in sprint qualifying and the sprint race. The entire top 7 of the world championship shared the first seven places on the starting grid.

The Aston Martin drivers also had a disappointing qualifying after their disappointing sprint race. They both failed to get through the second session and were therefore the main victims of the preliminary phase. The battle for pole position continued between the two usual suspects of this season. The entire top 7 of the current World Cup standings were present in Q3.

These men were all in the first seven places after everyone had set the first time in the decisive session of qualifying. Just like in the sprint qualifying, Verstappen was only slightly faster than Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. At the end of qualifying, the top 7 of the World Cup, albeit in a different order, was also the top 7 of qualifying.

The first run is enough for Verstappen

Verstappen did not improve himself in his second attempt, but Leclerc did not take advantage of that. The others were also unable to come close to Verstappen, meaning the Dutchman took pole position for the sixth time this season. As a result, he is still undefeated in qualifications in 2024.

From the best position he will hunt for yet another victory during the race in Miami. “I find it very difficult to perform consistently over one lap on this circuit,” Verstappen said immediately afterwards. He didn’t really enjoy his fastest laps, but still won. “We did okay.”

Verstappen improves

It was not necessary, but Verstappen still improved to a second time. Lewis Hamilton is the surprising number three. His teammate Russell can also go to Q3.

Verstappen drove out on new tires and will probably see if it is necessary to set a fast lap. We don’t think so.

Two minutes to go. Which drivers will make it and who will we say goodbye to? We’ll know in about three minutes.

In the meantime, a correction from F1: Norris drove on softs and not mediums.

Striking: According to the computer, Norris (third) recorded his time on mediums. That would be impressive.

Meanwhile, there are traffic jams in the pit lane. All drivers want to create a gap and so we see a long procession of cars.

Verstappen goes to a 1:27.9 on used tires. That is a slower time than he set in Q1. Many drivers subsequently fall below the time of the reigning world champion: Leclerc, Piastri, Norris and Sainz are all a bit faster.

Verstappen arrives a lot earlier this time. A line forms behind him in the pit lane. The Dutchman drives out on used tires. This also applies to Pérez.

The two Mercedes missed the final phase of sprint qualifying yesterday and were eliminated in SQ2. They were just in the top ten, but Russell and Hamilton will have to repeat that in the next fifteen minutes to reach Q3.

The clock is running again. The drivers have fifteen minutes to join the top ten. It promises to be another exciting battle, because the differences were also minimal in midfield.

End Q1

We will not see the following gentlemen again today:

16. Bottas
17. Sargeant
18. Ricciardo
19. Magnussen

The grapes are sour for Ricciardo, because he finished fourth in the sprint race earlier on Saturday. Alonso is fifteenth and is lucky.

Verstappen the fastest

Verstappen sets a 1:27.6 and that gives him a place at the top of the times list. Pérez concedes a tenth. Norris follows at two tenths.
