Whether it was the aftermath of the championship celebration or not: PSV can no longer match the points record in the Premier League due to a draw (1-1) at Fortuna Sittard. The Eindhoven team mainly blamed this on a mediocre first half, Jerdy Schouten repaired the damage somewhat.

Did PSV still play for something after the championship? The party shook Eindhoven to its foundations earlier this week, but coach Peter Bosz kept insisting that his team can still really write history with a points record. How was that again? In 1972, Ajax scored 93 points, with a goal difference of +84.

PSV had 87 points before traveling to Sittard, plus a goal difference of +88. With two wins, PSV would be there. Well, yes, because things went a little differently than planned in Limburg. PSV looked frivolous, especially in the first half. The Eindhoven team ultimately ended up with a draw.

Dig under the bar

Bosz had changed his team in three places, so Walter Benítez, Joey Veerman and Johan Bakayoko started on the bench, Joël Drommel was allowed to keep goal. Whether it was due to those changes or the championship celebration: PSV got off to an extremely difficult start. After just 4 minutes, Drommel was able to distinguish himself with an excellent save from a free kick.

Around the half hour he had no answer to Inigo Cordoba’s goal (1-0). Olivier Boscagli lost the ball, after which Kristoffer Peterson kept an overview and offered the Spaniard an opportunity not to be missed. A little later it almost became 2-0, but Boscagli saved Peterson’s effort just before the line.

And PSV? That was a wake-up call after that phase. Luuk de Jong was twice very close to his 28th goal of the season, but he twice came up against goalkeeper Luuk Koopmans. Bosz intervened hard at half-time with a triple substitution, but PSV nevertheless continued to struggle for a long time.

Accurate Schouten

Although: with Joey Veerman on board, PSV immediately played easier football. Although this did not necessarily lead to a flood of opportunities, although the contribution of the Volendammer did help in standard situations. After De Jong initially became dangerous from a corner, the score was scored a little later via a header from Jerdy Schouten from such a corner: 1-1 after 72 minutes.

PSV pressed on in the final phase, but a second goal was not forthcoming. Ricardo Pepi was the most dangerous with a shot from distance, but he was unable to pass the excellent Koopmans.

PSV line-up: Drommel; Teze (46. Van Aanholt), Ramalho (69. Pepi), Boscagli, Mauro Júnior; Schouten, Saibari (46. Veerman), Til; Lozano (46. Bakayoko), De Jong, Tillman.

End of first half

A frivolous first half from PSV, which only really started playing football after the 1-0 (and almost 2-0) deficit against Fortuna. Is the points record in jeopardy?

De Jong again

PSV is now showing its teeth and is the parent party. This results in a new opportunity for De Jong, who shoots well, but encounters Koopmans again. The former PSV player is an excellent goalkeeper.
