Several people were overcome by the heat during the marathon in Leiden. That is why Mayor Peter van der Velden of Leiden has taken the decision to cancel the marathon on the advice of the safety region.
Van der Velden says that the emergency services could no longer cope with the large number of people who became unwell: “The pressure on ambulances, hospitals and other emergency services became too great, meaning that no other decision was possible. People’s safety and health comes first. “
News agency ANP wrote in the evening that at least 25 participants had ended up in the emergency room at the LUMC and the Alrijne Hospital with heat complaints. The hospitals denied to ANP that they could no longer admit people.

Emergency services were stationed all along the course to help runners in an emergency. The full marathon started at 10am and the half at 11am. The 10 kilometer distance was canceled after consultation with emergency services.
“Everyone who has registered for the 10 kilometers will receive a message from us next week,” the organization said.
