This time, Detective William Murdoch takes charge of a plane with a pig on board, which crashes above Toronto at the end of the nineteenth century.

‘Some kind of flying machine’ flies at the beginning of the sixth season Murdoch Mysteries through the image. The colossus crashes above Toronto and kills a victim on the ground. Remarkably, the plane was piloted by a pig. With this remarkable steampunk, the makers of Murdoch Mysteries immediately the tone: their brainchild, which is set at the end of the nineteenth century, still revolves around the New Age that is coming. Where inventions will improve life. But in the Canadian crime series, these new technological discoveries are often anything but the silver lining.

Nevertheless, Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) can get back to work. At the crime scene he stands looking at the plane wreckage, while officer George Crabtree (Jonny Harris), with another new invention in his hand (a hamburger), wonders whether the pig is an alien. Nonsense, counters Murdoch, who also concludes that the plane was controlled remotely. Ultimately, the detective comes across a conspiracy that has something to do with a technological battle between Canada and the United States.

Not surprising in itself: everyone at that time wanted to obtain blueprints of important technological innovations.

Near the end of the episode, Murdoch also ends up in one such new invention, a professional-looking airplane. The scene in the sky looks quite funny, but that’s funny Murdoch Mysteries do have. Sometimes it almost seems as if the makers make no effort to make the sets truly historical. That will most likely also have something to do with the limited budget. But with a little imagination you can still get there as a viewer.
