A grandmother from Bari, southern Italy, accidentally poisoned her four-month-old grandchild by pouring white wine into his bottle. The grandmother switched a bottle of water with a bottle of wine and poured it into the baby’s bottle with the milk powder. The child ended up in an alcohol coma. He is on the mend.
The baby was staying with his grandmother on Monday when disaster struck. The woman did not realize she had poured white wine into the child’s bottle until the baby suddenly refused to drink any more. According to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica the grandmother immediately called the emergency services.
Baby is in intensive care
The child was quickly treated and taken to a hospital in Brindisi, near Bari. He underwent gastric lavage and was intubated before being transferred to the Giovanni XXIII Children’s Hospital in Bari. There he had been in intensive care in an alcohol coma for the past few days. His conditions are now stable and appear to be improving somewhat, but because he is so young, the risk to his life has not yet been completely ruled out. Rai News reports that the infant can now breathe independently.
According to initial findings, the grandmother was at fault because she keeps both her water and wine in opaque bottles. The Brindisi Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation, but no criminal investigation has been initiated (yet).
