Crew of ship seized by Iran released after almost three weeks | Abroad

--

Iran has released the crew of a container ship seized last month. The vessel with Israeli ties remains under Iranian control.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRG) seized the ship MSC Aries on April 13 in the Strait of Hormuz. This followed Tehran’s promise to retaliate for a suspected Israeli airstrike on an Iranian consulate in Syria.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian calls the release of the 25 crew members a humanitarian act. According to him, the MSC Aries “violated maritime laws”.

According to him, it is also clear that the ship has ties with Israel. The MSC Aries sails under the Portuguese flag. The owner is Gortal Shipping, a company linked to Zodiac Maritime of Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer.
