Nearly ten thousand residents of the Indonesian volcanic island of Ruang have to move permanently. The government of Indonesia decided this due to the increased activity of the Ruang volcano. There are major concerns about new eruptions, which could potentially cause a tsunami.

The volcano erupted again last Tuesday. An ash cloud almost five kilometers high came from the volcano off the coast of Sulawesi. The streets and houses on the island are covered in a thick layer of volcanic ash.

Evacuation

Earlier in April there were also several violent eruptions. In recent weeks, almost all residents of Ruang have been evacuated. The government has now decided that they cannot return.

To make the permanent move possible, many houses have to be built. They must come to Bolaang Mongondow, an area on the island of Sulawesi. This is located about 200 kilometers south of Ruang.

Local authorities have declared a state of emergency until May 14. In the event of a new eruption, part of the volcano could collapse, which could lead to a tsunami.
