German MEP Matthias Ecke was assaulted and seriously injured in Dresden on Friday evening. The SPD politician has been taken to hospital and will require surgery. News agencies and German media report this.

Ecke was allegedly attacked by a group of four people when he was hanging up election posters. Shortly before, a 28-year-old Greens employee had also been kicked and beaten while putting up posters. Authorities suspect the same group is responsible for both attacks. According to the local branch of the SPD, other employees who pasted posters were also intimidated.

The attack on MEP Ecke is “an unmistakable alarm signal for all people in this country. Our democratic values are under attack,” responded the chairmen of the SPD Saxony. “The attacks by criminals on poster teams of democratic parties are an attack on the foundations of our democracy.”

Recently there have been more attacks on politicians in Germany, especially on members of the Greens. Robert Habeck (Minister of Economy and Climate) was attacked on a ferry in January, and last Thursday evening, Bundestag member Kai Gehring and Essen’s third mayor Rolf Fliß were attacked in Essen.
