Journalist, columnist and he can now also call himself a writer: Don van der Veen. Last Wednesday afternoon 9 November he presented his very first book ‘A DONderse view of the world’ during a well-attended book presentation in the Heren van de Rechter.

Almost everyone was present: family, friends and colleagues (but where was Lampe?). The very first copy of the book was handed over to his former boss, former editor-in-chief and publisher Henk Ymker; the man who hired him 35 years ago at ‘het Olde Wief’ and who, like Don, started his career as a sports reporter. “Sports reporting is a good basis,” says a satisfied Ymker, who has already written several books himself.

As a true Steenwieker, Don knows everything about his beloved tower, Steenwijk, its inhabitants, the gossip and stories. And 35 years of working in local journalism provides more than enough fodder for a book. Plus the fact that he turned 60 this year: also a great opportunity for something lasting like a book. And there will be more books to follow, Don said during the presentation, because he has a taste for it. His book contains 58 stories and a selection from his columns. In the book we learn everything about how he ended up in the journalist profession, the common denominator of La Tour Eiffel and Saint Clemens, the Ketelbinkie van Steenwijk ’34, ‘Stokkie’, the Spartan giant Gerrie and much more.

A fun, readable collection of stories with humor for all Steenwijkers and the rest of the Netherlands. Thanks to the local photographers, including Sieb van der Laan and Wilbert Bijzitter, who have provided many of the beautiful pictures. The cheerful cover photo is from Wilbert and the photo on the back cover was made in Zandvoort by Don’s friend Carolina Linthorst. Both photos have a special meaning for Don. The book is available at the Heren van de Rechter and Primera Steenwijks Boekhuys, where Don will hold a signing session during the Christmas shopping evening on Saturday 10 December between 7 pm and 9 pm. Great for those who are still looking for an original Christmas present.
