Lelystad Center Station has a good chance of becoming a national monument. This is what the Cultural Heritage Agency says. The colorful building from 1988 is on a longlist of a thousand buildings to become a national monument.

The station stands out because it symbolizes the resurrection of the NS, says Lieke Droomers of the Cultural Heritage Agency. She specializes in heritage from after 1965. According to her, the station in Lelystad symbolizes the ‘identity crisis’ that the NS was experiencing.

‘Rediscovery of the stations’
In the early 1980s, traffic jams on the highway increased and the train was taken more often again. The NS therefore wanted to reinvent itself, says Droomers. The NS needed a new image and that requires a new type of station. According to the Rijksdienst, Lelystad Center is therefore an example of the rediscovery of the stations.

Colorful
The platforms clearly show what makes the station special. The design is postmodernist, Lieke Droomers explains. “You see that each color has its own function.” The roof is red, the pillars are blue and the lamps are green.

The government agency looks at buildings that were built and constructed between 1965 and 1990. The age of a building does not matter. The list includes several Flevoland buildings.

According to the service, Lelystad station actually has a chance of becoming a monument. It will be known at the beginning of 2025 whether the station will actually become a national monument.
