Over the years, Lauren has starred in several shows alongside Matthew, including Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, The Odd Couple and Go On. Lauren now tells CBS Mornings that Matthew was just as funny behind the scenes as Chandler Bing was in Friends. “Nobody made me laugh that hard,” Lauren says. “I just had tears streaming down my face. It was so nice to be with him and be his friend.”

Lauren also explains how happy he was with the publication of his memoirs Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing in 2022. “He was so proud of the book and how many people it touched,” says the actress, who was honored by Matthew with a photo of them together in his book. “I haven’t seen him this happy in a long time. That’s a nice memory,” she continues.

According to Lauren, Matthew hoped that his book, in which he describes his battle with addiction, would help others. “He leaves behind beautiful work, which is something to be grateful for. And again, the book really meant something to him. So it was a very happy year for him.”

After his death, several friends and colleagues shared tributes and fond memories. The protagonists of Friends issued a joint response two days after the actor’s death: ‘We are all devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast members. We are a family. There is so much to say, but now we take a moment to grieve and process this tremendous loss.”

Since then, they have also separately shared their memories of Matthew on their social media channels.

Matthew died on October 28 at the age of 54.
