On December 9, 2018 she had to say goodbye to her great love, visual artist Aat Veldhoen. He died at the age of 84 from a stroke. The longer he’s dead, the more Hedy wants him. ‘Sometimes I think: this has gone on long enough, now come back again,’ she says in KBO PCOB Magazine.

Best for last

Hedy was 59 when she met Aat in 1997. He 61. After not being in a relationship for six years, she now missed being wanted by a man. That man became Aat. He wanted to copy Hedy and invited her as a nude model to his studio. The spark jumped in full force. They had an intense relationship. Hedy was madly in love with Aat, but she has had more great loves. “My life was speckled with men,” she told Nouveau earlier. “I’ve always said I’ve saved the best for last, and that’s how it feels.”

Never again

After Aat’s death, Hedy said that she no longer wanted a new partner. She came back to this in Nouveau last year: ‘You never know, of course…’ Hedy is no longer concerned with a possible new love, but with her deceased husband. The realization that she will never see her ‘Aatje’ again seems to have really dawned on her now, she tells KBO PCOB Magazine. “There are things that can comfort me—for example, that this happened to us at a later age, or that he didn’t get some illness that had yet to be served—but that irreversibility remains the hardest thing: he’ll never come back.”
