There is a serious stomach flu in large parts of the Netherlands. Goeree-Overflakkee in particular has been hit hard. The RGO reports that more than 100 people are now home sick. The Van Weel-Bethesda Hospital in Dirksland is even said to have given a code red, according to a message on social media that is often shared. However, that is not true, the hospital now reports.

The hospital released an official message on Monday, May 13, 2024. The communications department writes that there is a norovirus, which causes stomach flu-like symptoms. Many hospital staff and patients are indeed sick. However, the hospital has not given a code red.

The often shared social media message also states that the complaints are caused by drinking water. This is also refuted by the hospital and water company Evides. The water company reports that the quality of the drinking water is continuously monitored and that there is currently no indication that the norovirus is in the drinking water. It is therefore safe to drink the water from the tap and prepare food with it.

According to Evides, our drinking water supply is well protected against all viruses. Thanks to careful purification methods, Evides water purification plants are well able to remove all viruses that are known to be transmitted via water.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. This is called stomach flu and is accompanied by complaints such as vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, fever, headache, abdominal pain or abdominal cramps. Around 4.5 million Dutch people get stomach flu every year. Half a million of the cases are caused by norovirus. The time between infection and complaints is between one and three days.

The norovirus is very contagious. There are no vaccinations or medications to prevent infection. The only thing that helps somewhat is good hygiene, so wash your hands thoroughly with soapy water.
