Marcel and Walter decide to do what they have been dreaming of for years: a Bed & Breakfast on the Spanish Costa Blanca. Walter’s alter ego, drag queen Charlotte, also comes along. She likes to perform on the boulevard. Did their dream come true?

Update Marcel, Walter – Javea

We have now lived in Javea for over a year and look back on a wonderful and instructive first year. We are happy with the decision not to rent out the entire top floor and to retire to the basement during the summer months. But only three individual rooms, with us as hosts in the background. Depending on what the guests want, we can interact more or less and give advice for day trips and places to go out.

The concept whereby we want to give people a feeling of coming home in an atmospheric and luxurious ambiance with a personal touch, is well received by the guests. In the summer months we were nice and full and we mainly had Spaniards as guests. Outside this period we had many Dutch guests, mostly from or through our circle of friends.

piggy bank

Because all our savings are in the house and the B&B cannot yet cover the monthly costs, and Marcel’s work from home is still in the investment phase, Walter started working in a nearby pub. A super nice place, where many Dutch people come and where we have met many new friends in a short time.

Walter really likes it there and is now the face of the business. Still, he plans to work less there and to focus more on the B&B. The reason we came to Spain and the performances as Charlotte.

Due to Walter’s side activities, the division of roles within the company has shifted a bit. So far Marcel has taken on the role of host and he likes it better than expected, but it will become more and more a collaboration between us.

Donna Charlotte

Charlotte is now a household name on the Costa Blanca and she performs 1 to 2 times a month. Due to word-of-mouth advertising, the frequency is expected to increase further. Charlotte now also does bingos and wedding ceremonies. Marcel always comes along as a driver and personal assistant. We have regular fun outings with each other because of this.

Both our dogs are having a great time. Claire has now reached the age of 15 and is still happily participating. Our labradoodle puppy Charlie joined us in May 2022 and is a huge charmer. All of our guests loved Charlie and Claire, and enjoyed their cheerful demeanor.

Highlight

One of our highlights was the May holiday when our kids visited and were able to feel at home in the house and surroundings. They have now been staying with the mothers in Bali for a year and we regularly have a nice video contact. We really like life in Spain and in particular in Javea.

Every day feels like a holiday, the weather is wonderful, the people are friendly, and there is little stress. We walk a lot with Charlie and discover new beautiful hiking trails every week. The coastline with its beautiful jagged rocks and romantic bays remains fascinating.

Go with the flow

We don’t miss the Netherlands as a country, but of course we do miss our loved ones. Fortunately, they know where to find us here in Javea and we are happy that we have enough space to let them spend the night. We are very happy that we have taken the step to change course. It has certainly brought us closer together and we have especially learned to leave stress and certainties behind and go with the flow.

We do not plan more than three months ahead and are now confident that, by being open, we will hit the right new things on our path. No idea where we will be in five years. We really live in the moment here and that feels good.

Viva Espana!
