In Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen, a giraffe was killed on Wednesday afternoon while giving birth to her fifth foal. The young had already died in her womb. The zoo reports this on its own website.
Hidaya, as the giraffe was called, had been giving birth since Tuesday. However, the young was lying wrong in the belly, so it took a very long time. On Wednesday, zoo staff noted that the animal was not doing well. The vet and the caretakers then decided to put the giraffe under anesthesia and help her give birth.
While helping, the cub turned out to be lying in the belly with a ‘backward neck’. This made the procedure ‘very difficult’ and help from a nearby veterinary practice was necessary.
Due to their long necks and associated complex blood circulation, a long period under anesthesia is always a major risk. That also turned out to be the case now, because the procedure ultimately proved fatal to Hidaya.
The team of zookeepers say they are ‘devastated’ by the events.
