Marieke Elsinga says sorry for the “distasteful jokes” she made about rapper Def Rhymz, who died on Sunday. The radio DJ received a lot of criticism on social media for her comments.

Def Rhymz was known for the song, among other things Shake, in which the lyrics “bag, bag, bag” can be heard. Elsinga wondered in the broadcast whether that text could also be heard while the rapper’s coffin was being lowered.

In her Instagram Stories, the Qmusic DJ writes that she has made an “ugly and stupid mistake”.

Elsinga says she is not someone who “inappropriately insults people or makes ugly jokes about people”. The radio maker presents the Qmusic morning show together with her good friend Mattie Valk.

“We talk openly and then very occasionally you make slips and then you think: oh, this really isn’t possible,” Elsinga writes. “I can only be heard live on the radio at that moment, so the joke is no longer made between ‘two friends’, but in a place where everyone can hear it.”

‘It really wasn’t my intention’

Elsinga realizes that she has hurt people with her statements. “I hurt family and loved ones and that was really not my intention.”

The Surinamese-Dutch rapper Def Rhymz, whose real name was Dennis Bouman, died on Sunday at the age of 53. He had been suffering from heart problems for some time. His family said complications had arisen.

The artist had his breakthrough in 1999 with the song Doekoe. Two years later he released his album The Goodest out. This included hits like Shake and I can’t be stopped.
