Former film producer Harvey Weinstein has been hospitalized after being moved from a prison outside New York City to a prison in Manhattan.
He was examined in a jail and then taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, one of the largest hospitals in the United States. “It looks like he needs a lot of help,” his lawyer said. “He is undergoing all kinds of tests. He is quite a wreck in terms of health,” his lawyer Arthur Aidala told the AP news agency.
Heart problems
His lawyer calls Weinstein, convicted of rape, “a 72-year-old man whose health is failing.” In recent years he has been struggling with heart problems, diabetes, sleep apnea and eye problems. His lawyer does state that his client is mentally “razor sharp”. After the investigations, the intention is that Weinstein will be returned to the prison island of Rikers Island, an island near LaGuardia airport.
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York in 2020 for rape and sexual assault of two actresses. Last week, that sentence was annulled because, according to the court, he had not received a fair trial. However, he remains behind bars because he was also sentenced to prison for rape in Los Angeles. There he was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
