The Oeverlanden nature reserve near the Nieuwe Meer will be dominated by the Amsterdam Sand Sculpture Festival next month. The stories from the area are transformed into large sculptures created by the world’s best artists. And not the sometimes well-behaved sculptures that you sometimes see on the beach, but just like life itself in the recreation area, with bums, men having sex and Scottish highlanders. “If you come here you can expect a penis”, says one of the artists.

The two to three meter high sand sculptures can be seen throughout the forest. In total there are five, each with its own meaning and thought. The artworks therefore highlight subjects such as crime, homelessness and love for men.

With the sculptures, the artists want to draw attention to events that have taken place around the area in recent years, with the frayed edges taking center stage.

The sculptures can be visited free of charge until 23 October. Weather and visitors permitting, because “it’s real sand, so vulnerable”.
