Family, friends and fellow villagers said goodbye today to 5-year-old Mayra Kaljouw from Koudekerke, who died unexpectedly on November 9. They heeded her parents’ call to see their daughter off with pink balloons. Mayra loved pink.

The request to form a guard of honor had been widely communicated in advance. By the family itself, but also by Mayra’s school, CBS ‘t Klinket. “Our hearts ache, but we wrap it in friendship and shared tears,” the leadership wrote on Facebook.

Today people stood in rows in the Middelburgsestraat and Biggekerksestraat, where Mayra passed by in a carriage and to the sound of bells. Many of her parents’ police colleagues paid the girl a last goodbye.

Numerous initiatives started this week in Koudekerke, such as a light tour that will be held in the village tomorrow evening. The Sinterklaas parade has been changed on Saturday and all children walk past Mayra’s house. As a thank you for all the support and compassion, her parents chose a grand farewell.

Mayra Kaljouw was buried in a private circle this afternoon.
