A large fire in a high-voltage station on Edisonpad in Leiden will release a lot of smoke on Sunday afternoon. A large cloud of smoke passes over an adjacent residential area. A flat is evacuated.

The fire started around noon. Witnesses saw an explosion and a large burst of flame. A lot of black smoke comes out of the chimney of the high-voltage station.

A nearby flat is evacuated. The fire service cannot say at this time how many residents are affected.

The fire brigade quickly scaled up to GRIP 2. Fire brigades from all over the region are on site to assist in fighting the fire. That is a complex matter.

There are fences around the transformer station, which made it difficult for the fire brigade to enter. With the help of TenneT employees, we have now managed to reach the building.

The fire service spokesman said it is not yet known how the fire started. “No one was in the building when the fire started. We are now evacuating a flat and making an inventory of what is going on. We can tell you more later.”

The fire is raging in the 150Kv substation of grid operator TenneT.

More later.
