You cannot deny Rick Wierema a heart for the cause. The goalkeeper of Noordster’s first team broke his toe in a very strange way this afternoon in the game against Peize: he kicked against the Peizer post disappointed after a goal against. The pole won, Wierema to the operating table.

Noordster chairman Raymond Drenth was present at the game in the second division on Sunday and saw it happen. ,,Peize was better in the first half, but we had the better of the game just after the break. Still, we conceded a goal out of the blue. Rick couldn’t help it, but he was angry and kicked the post. That pole couldn’t help it either, but it doesn’t give in either of course.”

And so Wierema had to be rushed to the hospital. “He is being operated on there. I didn’t see it myself, but the attendant said the toe was about the other way around. So he showed commitment. Oh, that’s how he makes the newspaper once…”

The 1-0 turned out to be the decisive goal in the game. Hopefully Wierema won’t let his disappointment down on the hospital bed when he hears the final result
