It is not yet clear whether the National Fireworks at the Erasmus Bridge can continue on Saturday. It is still unknown when the knot will be finally cut.
The KNMI predicts strong winds across the country for tomorrow. Code yellow will even apply to the northwest of the country tomorrow evening, because it can blow stormy. Strong winds are also predicted in South Holland, which is reason enough for the municipality of The Hague to cancel the planned fireworks show at the Hofvijver there.
But the continuation of the large fireworks in Rotterdam is also uncertain. Mayor Aboutaleb says through his spokesperson that no decision has yet been made. That may not happen until Saturday. “Of course it can still be too bad. We keep in touch with the relevant services, such as the DCMR.”
The company that lights the fireworks is already worried about the wind forecast. According to Jolanda Pen of Dream Fireworks, the enormous fireworks may no longer be set off in winds exceeding force 5. “It is about tension.”
Alternative
It would be a major disappointment if the National Fireworks, and the National Children’s Fireworks earlier in the evening, were cancelled. Not only do many thousands of people come to watch every year, this year it also serves as an alternative for anyone who likes fireworks: in Rotterdam, for the first time, private individuals are not allowed to set off fireworks, just like in the neighboring municipality of Schiedam.
A fireworks show is also planned there on Saturday evening. A spokesperson reports that a decision will not be made until the evening itself. “Unless the weather conditions for Schiedam are clear enough that we can already make a decision.”
