The Groningen city council has sent a statement about the UMCG children’s heart center to Minister Ernst Kuipers of Health. The council advocates for the preservation of the center. The entire council urges the minister to make the importance of regional distribution a major factor when choosing 2 locations for children’s heart centers in the Netherlands.

The council feels supported by the impact analysis of the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa). This shows that the effect of removing pediatric heart care from the UMCG is significant. Because this jeopardizes the regional accessibility of acute care. The removal of the pediatric heart center from the UMCG also has consequences for other care in the UMCG and other hospitals, because the UMCG has a strong regional function.

Expertise

In addition, the UMCG has built up expertise that cannot be transferred to other centers and would then be lost. All 12 council factions believe that this should be prevented and that the UMCG should keep its children’s heart center.

This week, Minister Kuipers asked the Dutch Federation of University Medical Centers (NFU) to come up with a proposal to concentrate complex care at two locations. The UMCG has previously spoken out in favor of three locations, but after the minister’s decision has indicated that it would like to become one of the two locations. In the statement, the Groningen city council urges the minister to make the importance of regional spread a major factor when choosing two locations.

Motion

The council of the municipality of Groningen also adopted a motion on December 21, 2022 in which the council asked the council to urge the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport and the members of the House of Representatives to accept the proposed cabinet decision to close the children’s heart center in Groningen definitively off the table and thus put an end to the uncertainty for patients, employees and residents of the Northern Netherlands.
