Last year again more people died than expected. Important causes for the so-called excess mortality were the flu and corona. This is evident from new annual figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

In 2022, approximately 170,000 people in the Netherlands will die. That was about 14,500 deaths (9 percent) more than expected. More people died in all age groups.

The excess mortality was slightly lower than in 2020 and 2021, when the Netherlands was still struggling with covid-19. But last year still more people died than before the corona pandemic, even compared to the years 2015 and 2018, when there was a severe flu wave.

Excess mortality is the difference between the number of expected deaths (on average about 150,000 per year) and the number of people who actually die.

There was no excess mortality during the first three months of 2022. But this changed at the end of March: since that time there have been more deaths than expected almost every week, Statistics Netherlands notes. Around that time, a wave of flu began that lasted about three months. Since mid-December there has been another flu epidemic.

Highest under 50 years

At 13 percent, excess mortality was relatively highest among people under the age of 50. Statistics Netherlands does not provide an explanation for this. In absolute terms, the numbers are small: 645 more deaths than expected, compared to 13,800 over the age of 50. The statistics office does not report anything about delayed care, care that was postponed due to the corona pandemic.

A large proportion of the deaths also occurred in people receiving some form of long-term care, such as residents of nursing homes or care facilities for the disabled.

Last year, life expectancy rose slightly, to an average of 80.1 years for men and 83.1 years for women. Due to the corona pandemic, life expectancy fell by several months in previous years.
