The podcast Slapeloos by RTV Utrecht journalist Bernadette Keizer (28) can be listened to from Friday 2 February. This revealing podcast is about insomnia: Insomnia. With a fresh look at the phenomenon of insomnia, Bernadette tells her personal story about the struggle she has had with chronic insomnia for three years. Sleepless can be heard on the RTV Utrecht app and website and on various podcast platforms.
Sleepless offers an in-depth insight into the world of insomnia, a problem that affects forty percent of the Dutch population and therefore also in our province. In the podcast, Bernadette asks why so many people, including herself, struggle with sleeping problems. More importantly, what we can do about it. To get answers to those questions, she interviews all kinds of regional sleep experts. From sleeping pills to sleep therapy, the journalist does not shy away from anything in her search for a good night’s sleep.
1. Why am I awake? – What does poor sleep do to you, what can you do about it and how do you get out of it? Bernadette reaches a point where she can hardly function anymore and decides to seek help. But how?
2. A bitter (sleeping) pill? – After a visit to the doctor, Bernadette is prescribed sleeping pills. She soon discovers that this does not improve her sleep problem, but actually worsens it. Why are those pills so addictive and why do we still continue to take them en masse? She asks sleep therapist Linda Bronts. “By taking sleeping medication you are actually only fooling yourself,” says Bronts.
3. Night rest – If medication is not the solution for Bernadette, what is? In this episode you will hear what it is like to undergo sleep therapy. And she discusses with her boyfriend Joris what effect insomnia has on their relationship.
4. Generation Zzz – In her search she discovers that she is certainly not the only one from her generation who has sleeping problems. In this final episode, Bernadette looks back on the sleep secrets she has learned over the past year. Will she ever be a good sleeper again? And what can we do as a society to sleep better? “We have the idea that in our society we have control over everything, including our sleep. But that’s not how it works,” says sleep expert Norbert Kleijn.
