Climate activists from Extinction Rebellion entered the A12 in The Hague on Saturday afternoon. The road is blocked for traffic coming in and out of the city. Police have started removing the demonstrators.

The demonstrators protest against government support for the fossil industry. The idea of today’s climate protest was that activists would walk from various places in the city “at a slow pace” along public roads towards the A12 around noon, says Extinction Rebellion.

Once there, the climate demonstrators took to the road to block it. According to a reporter from news agency ANP there are a lot of police on the scene.

Some demonstrators stand on the roadway, others sit on it. They cheer and play drums. They also wave XR flags and banners with text such as “Stop feeding the beast” to see.

After three requests, the police begin removal

The police asked the demonstrators three times to leave the road, but this was not heeded. Around 1:45 p.m., police began removing the activists.

One by one, demonstrators are removed. Some voluntarily walk along, others are put on a kind of stretcher and transported to a detainee bus. Two water cannons have been brought forward, but they have not yet been deployed.

Around 2:15 p.m., four buses with arrested activists had already driven away from the site. But since there are many hundreds of demonstrators present, the operation could take some time.

Extinction Rebellion blocks the A12 more often

Earlier in the day, the police briefly stopped several hundred climate activists near Prinses Beatrixlaan in The Hague. The police wanted to prevent them from ending up at a busy traffic intersection. A little later they were allowed to continue their way via a different route.

Extinction Rebellion activists have blocked the A12 before. This led to traffic jams and many arrests. The action group has already announced that it will continue to protest until the government withdraws support for the fossil industry.
