The Dutch tennis players can still hope for a place in the final round of the Davis Cup thanks to Tallon Greekpoor’s victory. In Groningen, the world number 29 put the Netherlands on level terms with Switzerland: 2-2.
After losing doubles to Wesley Koolhof and Jean-Julien Rojer, Greek Spoor faced a clear task: win. The 27-year-old Haarlemmer met that task in the sold-out Groningen Martiniplaza and was too strong for Leandro Riedi in two sets: 7-6 (6) and 7-6 (3).
In both sets, Riedi forced the 27-year-old Greek track to play a tiebreak. The Dutchman made the difference twice after numerous excellent serves.
Due to the victory of Krijgsman, the final match between Van de Zandschulp (ATP-69) and Marc-Andrea Hüsler (ATP-199) will decide the match later in the day. If Van de Zandschulp wins, the Netherlands will qualify for the Davis Cup Finals. If he loses, the Dutch team will have to go to the play-offs.
Earlier in the day, doubles partners Koolhof and Rojer lost in straight sets to Hüsler and Riedi: 6-7 (5) and 6-7 (2). On Friday, reekspoor won his first singles match, but fellow countryman Van de Zandschulp then crashed.
The Davis Cup Finals will be completed in September. The play-offs are also scheduled for the same month.
