with videoThe Dutch tennis players are again level in the Davis Cup meeting with Switzerland: 202. After Wesley Koolhof and Jean-Julien crashed, Tallon Greekpoor took a point by beating Leandro Riedi in two sets: 7-6 (6) 7 -6 (3). The decision now falls in the match between Botic van der Zandschulp and Marc-Andrea Hüsler.

Greekpoor and Riedi were very well matched. In Groningen there was not a single break in the match. But with the swirling orange crowd behind them, Greek Spoor won twice in a tiebreak.

Shortly before, Koolhof and Rojer, both winners of at least one Grand Slam tournament, lost in the doubles match of Hüsler and Riedi. The score was 7-6 (5) 7-6 (2).

The Dutch now have to win one more singles match to reach the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals. The pressure is on Botic van de Zandschulp, who takes on Hüsler.

The Netherlands reached the knockout stages of the Davis Cup Finals in 2022 and 2023. In Martiniplaza the battle is on for a place in the group phase, where a place in the knockout phase can again be secured.

Already yesterday, Switzerland reached the same level after Botic van de Zandschulp crashed against number 175 in the world.

No Djokovic in the Finals

Serbia will not participate in the Davis Cup Finals this year. The Serbian tennis players lost without star player Novak Djokovic in the qualifying round in front of Slovakia’s home crowd. The decision already fell in the doubles in Kraljevo: 0-3.

Lukas Klein and Igor Zelenay scored the decisive point for the Slovaks. Klein and Zelenay defeated Nikola Cacic and Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6 (4) 6-3. Djokovic only managed to win the Davis Cup in 2010. Fourteen years ago, Serbia defeated France 3-2 in the final.

De Jong with wildcard to Rotterdam

Jesper de Jong has received a wildcard for the ABN AMRO Open, the largest tennis tournament in the Netherlands. The number 139 in the world will make his debut in Rotterdam. The 23-year-old De Jong takes over the wildcard from the Serbian Hamad Medjedovic, who cannot participate in Ahoy due to illness.

De Jong reached the second round of the Australian Open as a qualifier at the beginning of this year. He lost in Melbourne to eventual winner Jannik Sinner.

De Jong’s participation brings the number of Dutch players in singles to three. Greekpoor and Van de Zandschulp are also present. The tournament starts on Monday, February 12.
