The Netherlands will speak to the Russian authorities about the arrest of a cameraman and a journalist from the NOS in Moscow. That action cannot go without a response from the Netherlands, outgoing Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot told the ANP. The minister could not yet say what form the Dutch reprimand will take.

Bruins Slot calls it “very worrying that they have been arrested.” Her ministry has close contact with the NOS. “Fortunately, they were released quite quickly,” said the minister in Brussels, where she met with her colleagues from other EU countries. “But as a journalist you just have to be able to do your job well. Without the risk of ending up in prison.”

In total, more than twenty journalists were reportedly arrested who were reporting on a demonstration on Red Square in the Russian capital. Military wives took to the streets to demand that their partners return from the front in Ukraine. The arrested journalists include foreign reporters from the French news agency AFP and the German magazine Der Spiegel.

There are clear international rules regarding the freedom of journalists to report, Bruins Slot emphasizes. Russia must also adhere to this.

The minister has a “diplomatic toolbox” to deploy in response. For example, she could call the Russian ambassador to convey the Dutch outrage or send Dutch diplomats in Moscow with that message. “But it is also good practice that I never say too much about it in advance.”
