The province of Brabant will spend an additional three million euros to improve public transport for people with disabilities. Municipalities can use that money to, for example, make bus stops more accessible.

The amount is in addition to the existing budget of more than 1.1 million euros that the province has reserved for accessibility in public transport.

The province believes that all Brabant residents, including those with disabilities, should be able to travel independently by public transport. The goal is to have all public transport adapted for people with disabilities by 2040.

‘Removing barriers’
“Good accessibility is crucial for the functioning of our society,” says Mobility Deputy Stijn Smeulders. “That is why we must do everything we can to remove the barriers for all travelers. In this case, almost literally.”

Municipalities can register to receive a budget. The province then works with people with disabilities to see where things need to be improved. Smeulders hopes that many municipalities will report in the near future. “Because then we can quickly get to work together to really make a difference.”

No money has been made available to make the buses themselves accessible. In Brabant, all buses and local buses are already accessible to people in wheelchairs.
