The N206 ir. G. Tjalmaweg has recently been widened from 2×1 to 2×2 lanes. The road opened in April 2023 and is part of the Rhineland Route. The maximum speed on this part of the N206 is 80 km/h. Many motorists adhere to this speed, but it appears time and time again that they regularly drive (considerably) too fast. Many speeding violations have been detected during police checks since the beginning of this year. The highest speed measured was 192 km/hour, more than double the permitted speed. ‘Fortunately no major collisions have occurred so far. But when a collision happens at such absurdly high speeds, the consequences are dramatic,” says Peter Koot, team chief Katwijk-Noordwijk, concerned. ‘So apart from the costs, you also take major safety risks for yourself and others when you press your accelerator too far. That maximum speed is there for a reason.’

In addition to the fines that drivers receive, this has even led to the suspension of their driving license in 46 cases. A driver’s license is confiscated when a driver drives 50 km/h (or more) faster than permitted. After the suspension of a driver’s license, the driver is no longer authorized to drive a car. If the police find that he/she does so, an official report will follow for driving without a valid driver’s license.

The Public Prosecution Service decides whether and when a driver will get his driver’s license back. Apart from these practical consequences, the fines are also stiff. If a driver drives 50 km/h too fast, the fine increases to 860 euros, from 100 km/h too fast the fine is even 2,400 euros. And that’s on top of the driving ban. Finally, the CBR obliges the driver to take a mandatory course in the event of serious speed violations. This not only costs time, but also hundreds of euros. Good to keep in mind when you’re on the road.
