Today there are about 700 municipal workers in the city cleaning the city after King’s Day. They collected a total of approximately 3,400 cubic meters of waste, which is considerably more than in previous years, the municipality said.

The revelers again produced a huge amount of waste yesterday. This year it concerns approximately 3,400 cubic meters of waste and a year earlier it was 3,000 cubic meters. In 2022 it was even 2500 cubic meters. “So there is still an upward trend,” according to the municipality.

The city was largely clean at 6 a.m., but post-cleaning lasts all day. The Westerstraat in the Jordaan was one of the first streets to be tackled. During the morning, most of the dirt in the center had been removed.

Mayor lends a hand

The cleaning service employees received help from both Mayor Femke Halsema and Alderman Hester van Buren. Halsema thanked her temporary colleagues via Instagram: “They work all night long: what heroes! Thank you for making our beautiful but dirty King’s Day city spick and span again.”

The municipality had taken various measures during King’s Day to limit the amount of waste as much as possible. For example, extra waste bins were placed and there was a special return point for items that were not sold on the free market. In addition, more than 350 mobile toilets were installed.
