MBO school Aeres in Barneveld has been hit by bird flu. Several animal care courses are offered at the educational institution. 1200 animals are being culled, Omroep Gelderland reports.

Director of the educational institution, Gertwim de Haas, says that it has been feared for some time. The school is at the heart of the poultry industry, an area that has been plagued by bird flu for almost a year.

“Last Friday there were signals that some waterfowl were sick. They seem to be extra susceptible to it. At the end of the day, a bird had already died. We then sent samples to Lelystad,” De Haas told the broadcaster.

No lesson with birds

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority came to the school yesterday and officially established the outbreak. At that time, the first birds were already culled as a preventive measure, with the exception of the tropical birds. A total of 1200 animals are culled. Director De Haas calls this “very sad”.

In the coming months, the school may not be able to work with poultry or poultry, which will have consequences for the students. “Hopefully after a month or two we can start with some laboratory animals,” says De Haas. “After that we have to rebuild it with breeding birds.”

The courses offered by the Barneveld school also involve working with other animals, such as camels, alpacas and rodents. That can continue. “Many animals remain, but we can’t give practical lessons about poultry and waterfowl for the time being. And the school year has just started.”
