The investigation by the Media Authority (CvdM), which includes the racism item of Ongehoord Nederland, is expected to be ready in the second quarter of 2023. The media watchdog informed the news agency on Thursday. AP know.

The CvdM is responding to the call from the NPO and the broadcasters to answer the question as soon as possible whether Ongehoord Nederland has violated the Media Act.

It concerns a previously announced investigation into the reliability of journalistic productions. Until the investigation has been completed, the Media Authority will not make any announcements about the findings.

The racism item in Unheard of News, which has sparked public debate, consisted of a collection of videos in which black people attacked white people. No context was given, other than that it involved incidents with a racist motive. But according to research by journalistic platform pointer there is no evidence of a racist motive in any of the incidents.

The NPO said last week after the Unheard of News-broadcast that “the limit of editorial freedom has been reached” and asked the media watchdog for a verdict on the item. NPO made the request “in light of Article 2.88, paragraph 5 of the Media Act: a public media institution takes appropriate measures to prevent the offer of its media services from inciting violence or hatred towards a group or member of a group”.

Assessing the appropriate measures is a task of the Commission, a spokesperson for the media watchdog said. “But the assessment of whether or not there is talk of hate speech is part of criminal law and therefore not a task for the Commissariat. The Public Prosecution Service has a role in this,” explains the supervisor. “We do not assess the content of programmes. We do assess the processes and measures taken by broadcasters.”
