There have recently been four hundred electric shared bicycles spread throughout the municipality of Groningen and another two hundred will soon be added. The bicycles can be rented by residents of the city of Groningen, employees, students and visitors for short and longer journeys. The bicycles are also on the five P+R sites around the city.
After an extensive tendering process by the municipality of Groningen, two suppliers ultimately remained: Bolt and GO Sharing. At the beginning of September, the two parties jointly set up a few hundred bicycles, and a few more will be added shortly. At the end of the year there will be 600 shared bicycles in the city.
These are high-quality electric bicycles. They can reach a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour. A helmet is therefore not mandatory, in contrast to the lightning-fast speed pedelecs.
The bicycles can be found – and parked after use – in one of the more than 200 hubs in the municipality of Groningen. You can see exactly where the hubs are located in the apps of the respective provider. These are ‘virtual’ hubs: they are therefore not physically demarcated. The hubs are located in the city center, near hospitals and various educational institutions. The Grote Markt and Nieuwe Markt bicycle parking facilities are important places in the city center where bicycles can be parked and taken.
The shared bicycles are ideal for employees or students, but also for people who have, for example, MartiniPlaza or the Martini Trade Park as their destination, the shared bicycles are a godsend. Due to the closure of the connection between the western ring road and Leonard Springerlaan – until April 2024 – travelers may experience delays or diversions. “It can then be faster and easier to exchange the car for a bicycle or to cover the last part of your journey with an electric shared bicycle.”
The bicycles are mainly intended for short trips in the city, but can also be rented for half-days. The rates are between 0.15 cents and 0.24 cents minute.
