Van der Burg emphasizes that people from Russia who report here will not be returned in any case, given the situation in Ukraine and deserters are certainly not. The Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) has not yet received any reports of the latter.

Asylum or not?

At the end of June, Van der Burg decided that Russian conscripts who refuse to fight in Ukraine or desert are allowed to stay until at least the end of 2022.

This buys the cabinet time to assess how to deal with this group. Whether Russians who do not want to fight get asylum will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Pressure at the border

The past few days have been busy on the Russian borders with Georgia and Mongolia. This is partly because men flee the country who have been called up to fight in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has called up 300,000 reservists.

Yesterday several German ministers said in the press that all Russian deserters or conscientious objectors may report themselves as refugees. Such an announcement has not yet been made in the Netherlands.
